Lost Your Job?

Losing your job is tough, but you’re not alone. There are resources and support available in South Africa to help you stay afloat and plan your next step.

Here's what you can do:

UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund)

If you contributed to UIF while employed, you may qualify for unemployment benefits. You can apply through the Department of Labour online at labour.gov.za or visit your nearest Labour Centre. Payments can assist with basic living expenses while you search for work.

SRD (Social Relief of Distress Grant)

If you’re unemployed and have no other income or social grant, you may be eligible for the SRD Grant from SASSA. Applications can be made online at srd.sassa.gov.za — all you need is your ID and cellphone number.

Credit Life Insurance

You may have credit life insurance linked to loans, store accounts, or your car finance. This cover can help settle or pause your debt payments if you’re retrenched. Check with your credit provider to see if you're covered and how to claim.

Starting a Business
